Animal Disease Tracking Ireland Ltd, trading as VirtualVet is a spin out from an established agri-tech business. Animal Disease Tracking Ireland Ltd is determined to demonstrate to the agri-food and animal health value chains, just how the can respond positively to evolving animal health legislation. For example, the EU’s Animal Health Law, (March 22nd 2016) and its focus on the use of technology in improving monitoring and surveillance of animal diseases, animal drug treatments and antimicrobial resistance.
VirtualVet has created a smartphone application with a companion web portal and phone support service which facilitates the collection and representation of disease and drug usage information captured in near real-time. Our aim is to enable the digitisation of important animal treatment data early and once. The use of a smartphone device brings significantly stronger standards of animal health traceability to the food producing value chain, and the digitised data has a value to various stakeholders in the industry.
Yet technology & data are only parts of the solution. Animal Disease Tracking Ireland Ltd is working to create industry wide collaborations to address the shortcomings in the existing drug packaging as well as the shortcomings in the surveillance methods and approaches within EU Member States and abroad. Our AHEAD 2017 workshop and its outcomes are an example of our value chain engagement.
While the vote by UK to leave the EU is a situation to monitor, it is our belief food safety rules and requirements will not be reduced. These rules safeguard public health and will be critical for food exports.
